Flat bar is usually a carbon steel alloy which has had the surface condition improved by drawing, peeling or grinding over the hot rolled finish supplied by the steel mill. Advantages achieved include improved machining, less wastage at component production stage, enhancement of physical and mechanical properties and improved dimensional tolerances and straightness.

 

 

1045 is a medium tensile low hardenability carbon steel generally supplied in the black hot rolled or occasionally in the normalised condition, with a typical tensile strength range 570 - 700 Mpa and Brinell hardness range 170 - 210 in either condition.Characterised by fairly good strength and impact properties, plus good machinability and reasonable weldability in the hot rolled or normalised condition.
 
1045 has a low through hardening capability with sections up to around 60mm only generally recommended as suitable for through hardening and tempering. It can however be successfully flame or induction hardened in the as rolled or normalised condition resulting in surface hardnesses of up to Rc 54 - Rc 60 depending upon quenching medium employed, type of set up, section size etc. Core strengths will remain as supplied.
 
It does not however respond satisfactorily to nitriding due to a lack of suitable alloying elements. 1045 is used extensively by all industry sectors for applications requiring more strength and wear resistance than the low carbon mild steels can provide and the higher strength of the low alloy high tensile steels is not necessary, plus those applications requiring flame or induction hardening.
 

Flat steel refers to the steel 12-300mm wide, 3-60mm thick, rectangular in section with a slightly blunt edge.Flat steel can be finished steel, can also be used as blank for welded pipe and thin slab for laminated sheet.Main use: flat steel as a forming material can be used for making hoop iron, tools and mechanical parts, used as structural parts of building frame, escalator.

Cold drawn 1045 steel bar is a medium carbon steel grade with higher mechanical properties, fair weldability and limited formability. This grade is widely available and commonly stocked because of its excellent properties and cost. Eaton Steel Bar Company stocks several diameters of this grade to meet your demands quickly. All cold finished material is manufactured to meet ASTM A108 requirements. We also stock many sizes that are JDM QL-2 certified. Hot rolled 1045 steel bar is a medium carbon common steel grade with moderate weldability, higher strength, and impact properties for a variety of applications. 1045 steel is a common grade because of its cost and excellent properties. However, due to its lack of alloying content, this grade has limits on mechanical properties and options for heat treatments.
